Seahawks re-sign DT Bernard to three-year contract
March 15, 2006
KIRKLAND, Washington (Ticker) - Rocky Bernard flirted with the Kansas City Chiefs, but decided to stay true to the Seattle Seahawks.
Bernard, who recorded 8 1/2 sacks last season while rotating at the defensive tackle spots, agreed to terms on a three-year with the NFC champions on Wednesday.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
The Seahawks had 15 players eligible to become unrestricted free agents after reaching the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history. They re-signed NFL MVP Shaun Alexander to an eight-year contract worth $62 million, but lost wide receiver Joe Jurevicius, who signed with the Cleveland Browns, and are in danger of losing Pro Bowl guard Steve Hutchinson.
The Minnesota Vikings signed Hutchinson, who was designated as a transition player by Seattle, to a seven-year offer sheet worth $49 million. The Seahawks have until Sunday to match the offer.
Bernard, who turns 27 in April, emerged as a pass-rushing threat this past season while rotating at the tackle spots with Chuck Darby and Marcus Tubbs. Bernard had two sacks in the NFC championship game win over Carolina.
A fifth-round pick out of Texas A&M in 2002, Bernard had 9 1/2 sacks in his first three seasons before his breakout year.
The Seahawks on Wednesday also re-signed returner-receiver Peter Warrick to a one-year contract.
The fourth overall pick in the 2000 draft, Warrick was a bust with the Cincinnati Bengals before being released last August.
