Report: Vikings reach agreement with FB Richardson
March 21, 2006
BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - It appears that coach Brad Childress is planning on a run-oriented offense.
ESPN reported Tuesday that the Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms with two-time Pro Bowl fullback Tony Richardson on a two-year contract.
The reported agreement comes one day after the Vikings added four-time Pro Bowl guard Steve Hutchinson, who signed a seven-year, $49 million offer sheet that was not matched by Seattle.
Richardson, 34, now gives the Vikings a premier blocking fullback who was named to the Pro Bowl in 2003 and 2004. Minnesota recently signed running back Chester Taylor.
Richardson spent his entire 11-year career with the Kansas City Chiefs and helped Larry Johnson rush for an AFC-high 1,750 yards last season.
Former Vikings coach Mike Tice did not utilize a fullback, instead employing Jim Kleinsasser as an H-back/tight end and using three receivers.
But Childress, who was named to replace Tice in January, will use the West Coast offense. Richardson is a perfect fit for the offense with his blocking and pass-catching ability.
Richardson enjoyed his best season in 2000, rushing for 697 yards and catching 58 passes for 468 yards.
