ESPN.com - NFL - Seahawks reach six-year agreement with DE Kerney
Seahawks land top free agent: Seahawks: The Seattle Times
excerpt:
The Seahawks chased down their first free agent from another team Monday night.
It's Patrick Kerney, a defensive end whose specialty is chasing down quarterbacks.
The Seahawks reached an agreement with Kerney on a six-year contract worth $39.5 million. The deal will pay him between $18 million and $19 million in what is termed guaranteed money, which is bonuses and salary the player is certain to earn.
Kerney was one of the Seahawks' priorities in the free-agent market, and he chose the Seahawks after visiting Denver first.
Kerney, who had never missed a game until last season when he missed the final seven games because of a torn pectoral muscle, played his first eight seasons with Atlanta. He had a career-high 13 sacks in 2004 when the Falcons reached the NFC Championship game.
Kerney played three years for Jim Mora, who is now the Seahawks assistant head coach and in charge of the secondary. Tim Ruskell is also familiar with Kerney, having spent one year in Atlanta's front office before he was hired as Seahawks president.
