Seahawks starting C Spencer out, may need 2nd surgery
KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) Seahawks starting center Chris Spencer has had complications recovering from offseason surgery on his shoulder and may need a second surgery that could cause him to miss the start of training camp, Seattle coach Mike Holmgren says.
"During his workouts in the offseason, it got a little sore," Holmgren said Friday, after the team's first-round draft choice in 2005 watched his teammates do agility drills and then went inside for rehabilitation during Seattle's first minicamp practice.
"Right now, we are resting him. We're hopeful he doesn't need another surgery," Holmgren said. "I don't think he is going to need one, but we have to let it quiet down just a little bit and see if it will respond to a new kind (of) rehab."
Holmgren then started to say that if Spencer did need another surgery, he might not be ready for a while -- but then the coach interrupted himself and refused to speculate. Spencer started 13 games last season, at both center and guard.
The Seahawks have already lost Robbie Tobeck, their Pro Bowl center from the Super Bowl season in 2005, to retirement this offseason.
