Seattle blames big plays, not injury

The Seattle Seahawks had every opportunity to blame their loss on the early exit of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. But they tried hard not to use that for an excuse.

"Give Minnesota credit," coach Mike Holmgren said. "They played a fine football game."

Hasselbeck went down with a knee injury on the opening series of the second half. But the Seahawks insisted his loss wasn't insurmountable. They said backup Seneca Wallace was very capable. Instead, they blamed themselves for giving up big plays.

hey i caught most of that game.. it was the best option at 4pm... WTF was darrell jackson thinking?? he really made a bonehead play in the 4th quarter not lurching forward to get the first.. i know he was probably trying to make another big play but DAMMM.. Seneca looked pretty good.. if u can get Shaun back quick.. you should be able to hold for 2-3 weeks until Matt is back..

A small group of Vikings fans clustered near the team's locker room Sunday, cheering on their new favorite left guard. "Hutch! Hutch! Hutch!" they yelled, drowning out a single Seahawks fan who was screaming: "Go home, Hutchinson! Seattle hates you! We HATE you!"

So it went for guard Steve Hutchinson, who made a triumphant return to Seattle in the Vikings' 31-13 victory over his former team. Hutchinson's controversial departure left more than a few Seahawks fans angry, and he admitted to hearing most of their invective during a highly unusual afternoon.

E. J. Henderson didn't get a chance to speak with Matt Hasselbeck after the game. But he made sure to send a message to the Seahawks' locker room via former teammate Nate Burleson, now with Seattle.

"My apologies and all," he said. "It definitely wasn't a dirty play. I was kind of falling to the ground."

Well, bad things are going to happen to a quarterback if he's under siege all afternoon. The Seahawks' Hasselbeck had blitzing linebackers in his face until he finally hobbled off with a knee sprain just seconds after halftime.

When the Vikings' linebackers weren't closing in, the defensive front was breathing heavily all around him. It was like one long obscene phone call. Hasselbeck, who will have a magnetic resonance imaging exam today, should direct his offensive linemen to go jump directly into Puget Sound.

Winning in the NFL's loudest stadium requires considerable precision, sharp focus and near-flawless efficiency. The Vikings fell short on all three counts Sunday in their 31-13 defeat of Seattle, calling into question one of the league's most basic tenets for winning on the road.
