Seahawks sign Wallace to one-year contract extension
By Len Pasquarelli

Scratch Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Seneca Wallace, who has posted a 2-1 record in place of injured starter Matt Hasselbeck, from the list of free agents available next spring.

The Seahawks have quietly signed Wallace to a one-year extension through the 2007, and the deal means that Wallace will not go into the free agent market. Without the extension, Wallace, who has played well in his first stretch as a starter, would have been eligible for free agency in March.
Complete financial details of the extension were not yet available. But in terms of base salary, Wallace was given a raise to $700,000 for this season, and the 2007 extension year is worth $800,000.
The deal appears to be an excellent one for the Seahawks, given that the salaries are palatable, and that it provides the team a solid No. 2 quarterback, one who has now gained some playing time experience, for at least one more season.
It's doubtful that Wallace would have been a big-ticket item in free agency next spring. But because of his performance in his three starts, and the dearth of quality backups around the league, he certainly would have generated good interest in the market.
A fourth-round choice in the 2003 draft, Wallace appeared in just seven games, with no starts, in his first three seasons with the Seahawks. In that stretch, the former Iowa State star had just 25 pass attempts.
But in his three starts in place of the injured Matt Hasselbeck, who could return to the lineup on Sunday after having rehabilitated a sprained knee, Wallace has completed 48 of 83 passes for 535 yards, with six touchdown passes, two interceptions, and a very respectable efficiency rating of 91.1.
Wallace has been effective throwing on the run, outside the pocket, and he has also provided Seattle a running dimension, having rushed for 100 yards on only eight carries. His only deficiency has been ball protection, as he has five fumbles for the year, including three in last Sunday's comeback victory over the St. Louis Rams.

smart signing. They get a good backup for another year and that gives them time to develope their next QB to backup Hasselbeck the following year.

PFT is reporting that this deal was actually signed in August. This makes alot more sense, one because we rarely sign in season, and 2 because his solid performance would dictate more than he got
