Seahawks make Grant third-highest-paid safety in NFL
By John Clayton

Like any good safety, Deon Grant needed to have the right type of timing and anticipation.

Deon Grant
Grant

The Jaguars safety traveled to Seattle after the Seahawks went 1-for-3 in the big free agent sweepstakes, landing defensive end Patrick Kerney but losing guard Kris Dielman and tight end Daniel Graham. Unwilling to lose Grant to the New York Giants or other teams, the Seahawks stepped up and made Grant the third-highest-paid safety in football, giving him a six-year deal worth more than $30 million a year.

To get the deal done, they gave him a signing bonus that topped the $11.1 million to Roy Williams of the Dallas Cowboys. Though the specifics weren't available, Grant is believed to received the biggest signing bonus ever given to an NFL safety.

Grant flew to Seattle on Thursday night to sign the deal along with his agent, Mitch Frankel.

Ravens safety Ed Reed, who signed a seven-year, $44.4 million contract, and Williams of the Cowboys, who has a five-year, $30.1 million deal, are the league's highest-paid safeties. Grant topped the recent contract signed by Michael Lewis, who got a six-year, $30 million contract to leave the Eagles and go to the 49ers.

The Seahawks wanted Grant for several reasons. They've been having coverage problems at the safety position for the past two seasons. Grant can help them with leadership and athletic ability. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder was a second-round choice of the Panthers in 2000. He signed a three-year, $7.2 million contract to go to Jacksonville in 2004. He's made 96 consecutive starts during his six-year career and he played 93 percent of the Jaguars' defensive snaps last season.

So much for getting a discount on grant vs. hamlin, i really hope hamlin signs for more than this. also my favorite part of the article is when clayton says "worth more than $30 million a year." But either way 6 years 30 is pretty dang high, but id much rather spend 6/30 on grant than michael lewis like SF did. He also got a huge signing bonus, which im not a big fan of. However despite the money, its just how the market is now, you deal with it and get players to fill needs. I like what Grant brings to the table as a cover safety

Jerry.....Hello, Jerry?.... thats Chris Harris and Danieal Manning at FSstill...... umm can I at least get a phone call...something..... ANYTHING.

I always liked Deon Grant. I thought he caught unjust criticism for injuries early in his career.

i'm w/ you 100% duds. i've been pining for grant, hamlin and potentially arch all off season. the rockhead safety duo of harris & manning leaves a lot to be desired.

Wow. That's a good pickup for Seattle. I think Deon is an underrated player. The Jaguars might really be ****ed after this though. Or who knows, maybe it's FUDGE time.

Grant is nothing special. Very average. He was good at times, and he was a coverage liability at times. I'll never forget how badly he played that game winning TD pass in Washington this past season. I didn't really watch Hamlin much, so I couldn't tell you if you are getting an upgrade or not.

I can't say I'm suprised by that money, though. I am happy Jacksonville did not spend that much on him. He should not be the 3rd highest paid safety in the league... but that's the pattern/problem with all of these signings now.

Reggie Nelson here we come!

Sounds like Seattle might finish first again in the Pathetic NFC West. I was hoping it would be competitive.
