Default Hasselbeck nearly hit by falling TV camera

Hasselbeck nearly hit by falling TV camera

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck didn’t really know what to say after the fact, only that he was grateful something catastrophic didn’t occur.
It was the most bizarre part of an odd evening, NBC’s overhead camera dropping out of the sky like some otherworldly flying saucer, nearly hitting Hasselbeck in the head.

It happened after Hasselbeck had called timeout on third-and-9 from his 26. As Hasselbeck made his way to the sideline to talk to coach Mike Holmgren, the bulky camera, held up by cables that extend into the upper reaches of the stadium, descended from the sky and landed on the field near Hasselbeck.

“Real close,” Hasselbeck said.

NBC came back from its timeout and tried to play off what happened, and when it went to break it tried to put the camera back in the sky. This time it almost swept through the Seahawks’ huddle, forcing both teams to retreat to the sideline while the situation was resolved.

Appearing to be cracked in half, the camera ultimately was lifted back in the air and permanently hovered above the Seahawks’ sideline. The referee indicated that if a ball hit any overhead wires, the play would be repeated.

“I really don’t know what to say,” Hasselbeck said. “I just feel really fortunate it didn’t hit me on top of the head.”
