Hey, I've got an inspiron 9300 dell lap top with a compact DVD rom. Everything was working great for the past couple years, but I just noticed that the dvd drive no longer appears in my computer, and when I checked the device manager, there is no sign of it. When I put anything in the drive it will spin a bit, but nothing comes up. Any ideas on where to start trouble shooting this?

Try reseating the cables first. If that does not work then try connecting the cable to a different IDE or SATA bus connector (depending on what type of cabling is used) and see if that works. Otherwise you may be looking at replacing the cable (rare but can possibly go bad) or your drive needs to be replaced.

Oh, before all that I mentioned in the previous post, make sure no one dicked around with your BIOS settings.
