is anyone else excited about the impact this guy can have on our team? finally a TE who is a legitimate threat in the passing game. this guy had more receptions as a rookie TE than any other rookie in the last 8 years, with the exception of Jeremy Shockey. TEs coach Ron Middleton believes Alex Smith can be like Antonio Gates
"He’s the prototype, he's the Antonio Gates type, and I think (Gates) is the best one out there. I think this kid has all the tools and the ‘want-to’ to be that."
i think that with the recieving corps having a lot of ?'s around them, he might have to be the next gates. if you remember when antonio had his breakout year the year after the david boston experiment. they had a lot of similar ?'s at WR that the bucs do now. If he steps up his game, he could very well be a solid fantasy option.
The thing I love about Alex Smith is his toughness. Bill Maas(whom I don't like)was drooling over A. Smith during the second Carolina game. Alex Smith was left to block Peppers one on one on 2 occasions during the game. Smith stonewalled Peppers, and actually blocked him better than Kenyatta Walker. I wouldn't expect him to do that for an entire game, but I wouldn't expect any TE's to block Peppers even twice during a game. Kudos to Smith, I love this kid.
smith definitely has the makings of something special. Gruden hasn't been known to key on the TE's throughout hsi coaching career, using them like you said to block or to help block the ends. Alex smith may see an upturn in looks in the endzone, but I just don't see his stats climbing that much higher.
As this young offense progresses everyone's stats will climb. We Buccs fan are tuned into defense first.....that's changing. Gruden is building a young dynamic offense. Look out NFL.
i do think that Smiths stats will get better. he is sumthin special and i think he can b among one of the greats by the time he is done. and he will help the bucs offense a bunch wit there pasing game.
Smith is a good TE, but he won't be used right in Gruden's version of the West COast offense. If anything he will be a good 3rd down and redzone target, but will never be a Tony Gonzalez or Gates type weapon, simply because Gruden doesn't use TEs like that. If Chucky can change the offense to feature a TE a little more, this guy can be a stud.
I can't comment on Oakland....but I know for a fact Jon would love to get the TE's more involved. We needed our TE's to stay in for max protect last few seasons.
There's only so much "U-Galloway" we can run... We need guys like Alex Smith to pose a real threat in the passing game. He's got the potential to be the best TE we've ever had. This kid looks like the real deal. Expect Gruden to draw up some plays just for him.
