Tampa Bay FB Mike Alstott declined to get into the specifics of when he intends to retire during the unveiling of his a 1969 custom built Camaro, which will be auctioned off for charity, when I spoke with him Thursday night at the Quaker Steak and Lube in Pinellas Park.
Alstott hinted toward retirement during a morning radio interview on 620 WDAE yesterday, but workers from The Mike Alstott Family Foundation heavily insisted media members in attendance not ask about football. When I tried to ask Alstott about his football future, one of Alstott’s associates poked me in the shoulder and said “charity questions only” and when I asked a follow-up question, he yanked my shirt in annoyance, but later apologized for his actions.
However, Alstott was the professional we all have grown to know and respect throughout the years and hinted an announcement would come soon.
“You’ll know. You’ll know,” Alstott said. “There will be something pretty soon ... I know you came out here for some football questions, but my concentration here is raising money for my foundation to help the youth generation. You’ll know awfully quick. When it comes about, you all will be there.”
According to the press release, Alstott commissioned SS Motorsports of Sarasota to build his custom muscle car in July. The goal was to auction the car to raise capital for the Mike Alstott Family Foundation. Alstott began the build process with SS Motorsports by choosing the car, the options, and customizing it to his specifications. The car features custom “Alstott” paint, genuine Wilson NFL football leather highlighted interior, and a 675 horsepower engine built in part by Alstott himself.
The auction is set to begin January 21st. This event is being marketed by Kompolt and auctioned by EBay. Beginning January 8th, you may pre-register to bid on this one-of-a-kind “Super Car” by logging on to
www.ebay.com/alstott. Other items including autographed cleats, football and rendering will also be auctioned off to benefit the foundation.
The foundation was formed to allow the Alstott’s to assist others in uplifting the minds, hearts and spirits of families and children on their way to realizing their full potential through various events, assistance programs, and celebrations. The foundation works with various non-profit organizations and individuals including but not limited to, Big Brothers / Big Sisters of Pinellas, Special Olympics Florida, The Angelus House, All Children’s Hospital, the Children’s Cancer Center, and the Sarasota Police Athletic Leagues capital campaign.
