Default Vince Young takes the field

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Titans promise they will be patient with Vince Young. That approach started Friday when Tennessee's quarterback of the future took the field for the first time as a professional.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher said coaches are being careful not to overload the third overall pick in the draft at rookie minicamp.

"We've talked about this. We want him to tell us if it's all meshing together and if it's too much," Fisher said.

"We're adding things. We're adding things each day. We'll add some things tonight and tomorrow, and then we'll send him home and he'll be back on the 16th and he'll be able to digest this and we'll move on."

Young led the Longhorns to the national championship as a junior at Texas last season. He said the first day was productive.

"It's fun to get with your teammates and basically getting out here and learning your assignments. It's basically learning from scratch all over again," Young said.

Young said the new playbook is not that much different from his old one.

"But you've just got to put it in their terminology," Young said. "It's just like a college playbook. It's thick, but you don't try to beat the coaches to anything. Whatever he gives you that day to study, that's what you go study and that's what you work on that day. You just take it page by page."

Young had a few rookie mistakes in the afternoon session, typical of first practices -- a couple of fumbled snaps from center and wobbly pass or two. But overall, his first effort was solid.

"I thought he did a nice job with everything from the huddle, to breaking the huddle, to getting under center, the cadences, the snap counts and the concepts we have for him," Fisher said.

As for his passing, Young impressed his coaches.

"This morning we threw one-on-one, and he completed four consecutive deep balls to receivers he'd never thrown to before," Fisher said. "That's a good sign because he's able to adjust and able to adjust real easily."

Young's new teammates had good things to say, too.

"The ball was right there, and that's all a receiver can ask for," said receiver Jonathan Orr, a sixth-round pick from Wisconsin.

While Young insists he feels no pressure, he did want to make a good first impression.

"These guys have seen me in college, but this is different. They want to be around me and see how I function and see if I'm really a leader," Young said.

wasn't surprised about the botched snaps from center. Young was rarely under center in college.

They said that they won't mess with his mechanics, but they need to address those under center skills immediately.

i think they should bench him for the 1st season and let Billy Volek start.. a couple years ago Volek was great when he started in place of the injured Steve Mcnair... this would give Young some time to get used to the game and improve his passing mechanics, snapping skills, etc. ...

i agree with u volek should start this year and next year because vince young has a long way to develop in to a nfl qb he has never played under center in college so let volek start for two years the give young a chance as the starter

the owner might ruin him, LOL

The Titans continue to say they'll be patient with rookie QB Vince Young, but team owner Bud Adams is looking at his calendar. He would like the former Texas star to be his starter on December 10--when the Titans play the Texans in Houston, where Adams lives.

The best thing they could do for Young would be to KEEP MCNAIR. Mcnair has been a mentor to Young, and his presense could be the difference between Young bieng great, or being the next Akili Smith.

For Vince Young's sake it might make the difference in the world. But from the Titans perspective, it doesnt look like thats going to happen.
