Default Fisher expects a new contract

Fisher expects a new contract - Nashville, Tennessee - Thursday, 07/19/07 - Tennessean.com

excerpt:

Titans Coach Jeff Fisher is heading into the final year of his contract, but Wednesday he said he expects a new deal to be ironed out without problems.

There has been talk that Fisher could stall negotiations with the Titans and become a free agent after the 2007 season, when several high profile teams including the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, New York Giants and Cleveland Browns could be in the market for a new coach.

But Fisher echoed what he's been saying since the Titans exercised a one-year option at the turn of the year.

"I expect it to get done," Fisher said. "I would say the same thing I've been saying: negotiations are progressing. Nobody's put a timetable on anything and we're just moving forward. I don't anticipate any problems and I fully expect to be here."

Titans chief operating officer Steve Underwood could not be reached for comment. At a recent NFL owners meeting, Underwood said the team policy is not to discuss negotiations in progress.

Adams approval needed

The contract would need the approval of owner Bud Adams, who has repeatedly spoken of his desire for Fisher to remain with the Titans in the long term.

Fisher's salary was $5 million last year and is $5.3 million this year. He's expected to get bigger annual salaries in a new contract. Fisher's agent, Marvin Demoff, did not return a phone call seeking comment.

"The communications lines are wide open and healthy," Fisher said. "There are always things that come up that, in my eyes, are more of a priority than my own contractual situation. Things that are player-related, team-related, roster-related, those types of things."

It's funny that so much talk was made about him being gone at the beginning of last year after his contract was up and now there is talk of an extension, football is a crazy business, lol
