While Kerry Collins reviewed, Billy Volek stewed.
The newly-signed Collins spent his first day on the practice field Tuesday with the Tennessee Titans after a late-night session with offensive coordinator Norm Chow in an effort to begin familiarizing himself with the team’s playbook.
Collins was added to the quarterback mix, and the reps he received in practice Tuesday came mostly at the expense of Volek, who still officially sits at No.1 on the depth chart at least for the time being.
Volek had already been dividing practice reps and playing time with rookie No.1 pick Vince Young, and now will have to share the workload three ways. Titans coach Jeff Fisher said Tuesday that Young’s share of the reps would stay the same, meaning Volek and Collins would have to divvy up the remaining practice time accordingly.
For Volek, who waited patiently for his turn to start, the addition of Collins comes as another jolt in a preseason where he has received less playing time in three preseason games than a normal starting quarterback would. Volek tried not to show his displeasure with the situation, but questioned the decision in the wake of such limited preseason work.
