Default Titans feel they have a beat-the-Colts blueprint: Grind it out

Titans feel they have a beat-the-Colts blueprint: Grind it out - USATODAY.com

NASHVILLE — Besides contempt, familiarity also breeds confidence, something the Tennessee Titans are long on even as they face Sunday's matchup with defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis.

In two games last season, the Titans can argue they played the Colts as well as anyone, losing by just 14-13 at Indianapolis in Week 5, then stealing a 20-17 upset in Nashville in December.

"There's no guess-work as far as playing them," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said this week. "You have a better chance of winning with No. 18 (Peyton Manning) on the sidelines. The best way to do that is to run the football."

In that regard, Tennessee seemingly had the best possible tuneup for Indianapolis. It controlled the ball throughout its 13-10 victory at Jacksonville, amassing 282 rushing yards. That was the second-highest total of ground yardage in franchise history, trailing only a 296-yard pounding against Kansas City in 1977.

"I think our coaches really have a good understanding of their personnel, I think we have a complete grasp of what they try to do," Titans linebacker David Thornton said of facing the Colts.
