Long-term deal is still in works

The Titans informed the agent for Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth on Friday that the team plans to use the franchise tag on his client by next week’s deadline.
But agent Chad Speck said Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt is committed to trying to work out a long-term deal for Haynesworth.
“We are working on a long-term deal for Albert,” Speck said. “I don’t anticipate that we will be able to get anything done prior to the designation deadline for franchise players. Mike confirmed to me that he will use the franchise tag on Albert but is committed to trying to get a deal done by July 15.’’
Teams have until Feb. 21 to designate one free-agent-to-be as a franchise player.
Once tagged, he gets a one-year contract tender that pays him the average of the top five players at his position from the previous year, or 120 percent of his salary from the previous year, whichever is higher.
In Haynesworth’s case, the 120 percent is higher, making his franchise tag salary $7.25 million.
Two teams have used the franchise tag since Feb. 7, the day the tag first could be applied. The Eagles used it on tight end L.J. Smith on Feb. 7, and the Cardinals used it on linebacker Karlos Dansby on Thursday.
