Default ex-skin gets the slammer

DENVER (Reuters) - Former National Football League running back and Super Bowl record-holder Timmy Smith was sentenced in federal court on Friday to two and a half years in prison for conspiring to distribute cocaine.

Smith, 42, apologized to the state of Colorado during a hearing before U.S. District Judge Lewis Babcock. "I have made a mistake and I wasn't raised this way," he said.

Babcock said the former football player had been respected at his job as a security guard at a juvenile detention center. "You were leading a Jekyl and Hyde lifestyle," he said.

The former
Washington Redskins tailback was arrested last fall along with his younger brother, Christopher, after the pair sold about $20,000 worth of cocaine to undercover agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Timmy Smith pleaded guilty in March to the conspiracy charge after federal prosecutors agreed to drop eight additional cocaine-trafficking counts in exchange for the guilty plea.

Christopher Smith pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of aiding and abetting and was sentenced this month to five years of probation.

In January 1988, Smith rushed for a Super Bowl-record 204 yards in the Redskins 42-10 rout of the
Denver Broncos. He last played for the
Dallas Cowboys in 1990.

Former Super Bowl Star Smith Sentenced

DENVER (AP) -- Tim Smith, who set a Super Bowl rushing record with the Washington Redskins in 1988, was sentenced Friday to 2 1/2 years in federal prison for cocaine distribution.

The 42-year-old former running back also was ordered to pay $88,000 in back child support and must report to prison by July 10.

His brother, Christopher Smith, 35, was sentenced May 12 to five years of probation.

The two were indicted by a federal grand jury in October. Tim Smith pleaded guilty to cocaine distribution and Christopher Smith pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting cocaine distribution.

They were arrested Sept. 30 and charged with possession of 500 grams or more of cocaine with intent to distribute. Police said Tim Smith sold about 20 ounces of the drug to an undercover officer for $13,600.

Smith rushed for 204 yards and two touchdowns in the Redskins' 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in the title game. He last played in the NFL in 1990 with the Dallas Cowboys.

He lives in Denver and had worked as a detention officer at the Gilliam Youth Services Center. He resigned shortly before he was indicted.

Timmy Smith gets 30-month sentence
Pleaded guilty on drug-deal charge
By Alicia Caldwell
Denver Post Staff Writer

Timmy Smith, a former Washington Redskins running back who helped beat the Broncos in Super Bowl XXII in 1988, was sentenced Friday to 30 months in federal prison for dealing cocaine.

Smith, 42, also was ordered to pay $88,000 in unpaid child support.

Chief U.S. District Judge Lewis Babcock ordered Smith, who is out on bail, to report to prison July 10.

Federal agents arrested Smith and his brother, Christopher Smith, last year after 20 ounces of cocaine worth $13,600 was handed off to an undercover agent in Greenwood Village.

Drug Enforcement Administration agents had recorded several drug deals involving the Smith brothers, according to court documents.

Smith was accused of working with his brother in selling cocaine to an informant eight times in 2005, according to a federal arrest affidavit.

In all, the Smith brothers were accused of selling nearly 1,318 grams of cocaine for a total of $31,150.

Both were charged with possession and distribution of cocaine.

But according to negotiated plea agreements, each pleaded guilty to a single drug charge and the other charges were dropped.

Earlier this month, Christopher Smith was sentenced to five years' probation for aiding and abetting in distributing cocaine.

Smith, who was working at a Denver juvenile detention facility at the time of his arrest, set an NFL record in 1988 for the most rushing yards in a Super Bowl - 204 - in Washington's 42-10 victory over the Broncos.
