Taylor could miss games

By David Elfin
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
June 2, 2006

Although Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor will not serve jail time after accepting a plea bargain in his felony assault trial yesterday, he still faces possible discipline from the NFL.
NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello said Taylor -- who yesterday in Miami pleaded guilty to a simple assault misdemeanor charge and a battery misdemeanor charge -- is subject to a fine, suspension or both under the league's personal conduct policy.
Aiello said a decision would be made before the start of the season.
The 23-year-old Taylor and his attorneys had rejected all talk of a deal since being arrested a year ago yesterday in the wake of a confrontation in Miami. Reports said the incident followed a theft of two of Taylor's all-terrain vehicles.
Police reports from the confrontation said Taylor brandished a firearm at three men, an act that had drawn three felony assault counts, each of which could have put him in prison for a minimum of three years and a maximum of 15 years. Taylor also faced a year in prison on the simple battery misdemeanor charge.
However, the recent switch in prosecutors from Michael Grieco to Abe Laeser made all the difference. Taylor, his father Pedro, the police chief in Florida City, Fla., and his attorneys met with Laeser at the assistant state attorney's office on Tuesday. Taylor's team gathered again yesterday at attorney Richard Sharpstein's office to consider the offer.
"The state offered a plea deal that couldn't be resisted," attorney Edward Carhart said. "Even though I didn't consider the state to have a strong case, the jury could have believed the state's witnesses. With a mandatory three-year sentence, Sean would have been a convicted felon and that would've meant the end of his football career."
And yet Taylor, who has maintained his innocence throughout the past year, at first rejected the offer, Carhart said.
"Sean turned it down and walked out of the office," Carhart said. "His father went and talked to him and Sean came back and accepted the deal. Sean wants to get on with his life."
In the court room today, Taylor told Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Leonard Glick the plea was "a hard pill for me to swallow" because "this is not something I think I'm guilty of." But Taylor added: "I believe it's in my best interest to accept this plea."
Under the terms of the deal, Taylor will be on probation for 18 months. He also will speak at 10 schools in Dade County, Fla., about the importance of self-control, discipline and staying in school and will give $1,000 to a scholarship for each school.
The plea also is a relief to the Redskins, who endured seven continuances of Taylor's trial, which originally was scheduled for last Sept. 12, the day after the 2005 season opener.
"We are glad that Sean's situation seems to be working towards a conclusion," Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said.
The fifth pick in the 2004 draft, Taylor has been embroiled in controversy on and off the field, but has earned raves from Washington's coaching staff for his play and his desire.
The league has fined Taylor seven times since he was drafted, including a $25,000 penalty for skipping the mandatory rookie symposium that first summer. After the January playoff victory over Tampa Bay, Taylor was fined $17,000 for spitting in the face of Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Sean Taylor was defensive, antagonistic, engaged in a bit revisionist history and twice displayed his familiar shrug-and-smirk when confronted with a question he didn't like.

Some things never change. Even though Taylor's legal problems have been resolved, and even though coach Joe Gibbs sat him down for a talk aimed a producing a "fresh start," the Washington Redskins safety was his old self when confronted by a gaggle of reporters Friday after the first practice of a three-day minicamp.

For starters, there was the assault case that hung over Taylor's head for a year, through seven trial postponements. Taylor ended the saga earlier this month when pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors, avoiding any jail time that could have essentially ended his career.

"I think in my case, in my scenario, I think it was the best way to just put it away and let me focus on football these three days," Taylor said. "So you don't have to ask me, 'Why did you miss camp again?' when I show up for training camp, (and) butcher me."

Taylor's relationship with both the Redskins and the media has been rocky since he was drafted No. 5 overall three years.

A partial list of his transgressions includes a $25,000 fine for skipping a mandatory rookie symposium, a drunken driving charge -- eventually dismissed -- that got him benched for one game, and seven fines for late hits and other on-field infractions, including $17,000 for spitting at another player during a playoff game. Then came the no contest plea, which could still lead to a fine or suspension from the NFL.

After all that, Gibbs made it clear that a trouble-free year from Taylor is near the top of the coach's wish list.

"He's had a lot of personal issues there," Gibbs said. "We've had a good talk, and I think he understands that. I think certainly he's been through a lot. I think he's learned a lot. Our feeling is he realizes some of the positions he's put himself in. I think he's ready for a fresh start."

Taylor gets fresh starts because he is immensely talented, with all the tool of a Pro Bowl player who could rule his position for years to come. The Redskins have punished him -- he was forced to work with the second-team unit Friday after missing a large chunk of the voluntary spring workouts -- but the message doesn't always seem to get through.

"As long as you're here from the end of July to January, or whenever the season ends, that's all your team really cares about," Taylor said.

Gibbs couldn't disagree more.

"I think he can be a dominating player," Gibbs said. "He's behind, because of the stuff he's missed. That's tough for us and tough for him."

Last year, Taylor defiantly skipped offseason workouts and wouldn't return Gibbs' calls, saying his offseason time was his own. He changed his story Friday, saying he would have been an offseason participant last year if it were not for "some complications," which he did not explain. He said he decided to attend some of the offseason work this year for the sake of team chemistry.

"Everybody's entitled to their own opinion as far as offseason goes," said Taylor, who also recently became a father.

Teammates and coaches regularly point out that, behind closed doors, Taylor is personable, smart and dedicated to his sport. The Redskins are hoping this is the year he becomes a good citizen when everybody else is watching.

"Hopefully," Gibbs said, "from here, on the road smoothes out."

Default Taylor being sued

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slu...v=ap&type=lgns

MIAMI (AP) -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was sued by a man who said the NFL player brandished a gun and repeatedly hit him during a fight last June.

Ryan Hill filed the suit on June 27 in Miami Dade Circuit Court and is seeking $15,000 in damages from Taylor.

The lawsuit states that Hill was bruised, incurred medical expenses and lost wages because of the fight.

Taylor, 23, reached a deal with prosecutors last month after they agreed to drop felony charges against him stemming from the fight. He pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors in the assault case and was sentenced to 18 months probation.

An altercation broke out on June 1, 2005, after Taylor and some friends went looking for people who had allegedly stolen his all-terrain vehicles. Taylor struck Hill "with his fists several times," and called him a thief. After the initial fight, Taylor left and returned to the scene with more friends and "pointed an assault rifle" at Hill, the lawsuit said.

Hill's attorney, Leonardo Canton, said his client tried to run away, but Taylor and his friends chased him with baseball bats.

"What happened to (Hill) is something that is pretty bad, there's no reason for it," Canton said. "He gets beat up and assaulted by Mr. Taylor and had guns pointed at him at a different point."

Taylor's attorney, Richard Sharpstein, called the lawsuit "useless" and ridiculous."

"Hill stole Sean's property. Hill baited him, lured him and suckered him into a fight," Sharpstein said.

Taylor, a former University of Miami standout, signed a seven-year, $18 million contract with the Redskins after he was drafted in 2004. He has six interceptions and 120 tackles in two NFL seasons, but has become almost as well-known for his troubles.

Taylor has been fined seven times during his professional career for late hits and other infractions, including a $17,000 penalty for spitting in the face of Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman during a January playoff game. He was also fined $25,000 for skipping a mandatory rookie symposium.
