Deaf advocates sue Redskins seeking closed-captioning
Associated Press
National Football League News Wire

GREENBELT, Md. -- Advocates for the deaf are suing the
Washington Redskins to get them to offer closed-captioning during
games at FedEx Field.

The National Association of the Deaf filed the class-action
lawsuit Aug. 31 in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt on behalf of
three Maryland fans who regularly attend home games.

"Providing captioning is not rocket science; it is simple, and
it is the right thing to do," Shane Feldman said in a statement.
Fedlman was joined in the suit by Paul Singleton and Brian M.
Kelly.

They contend the team is violating the Americans With
Disabilities Act by failing to provide captioning for the deaf and
hearing-impaired. It asks the court to order the Redskins and
stadium officials to provide and display captioning on scoreboards
and video monitors for all announcements, plays and penalties.

NFL teams are not required by law to do so. Redskins spokesman
Karl Swanson said the team considered a proposal to purchase
captioning equipment, but the proposal was rejected by Feldman.

Feldman was concerned about a possible 10-minute delay, said
Marc Charmatz, senior attorney with the National Association for
the Deaf Law and Advocacy Center.

Swanson said the Redskins are considering providing deaf and
hearing-impaired fans with 7-inch TVs that would pick up captioning
in the stadium. He added that all emergency information is posted
on the large screens and on TV monitors throughout the stadium.

What a dumb-***, if the deaf person wants to see closed caption, go home and watch the TV instead! What is the point of having closed caption if the deaf person is watching the game in the stadium?

This is just another example of wasting the court's time on a simple matter. What's wrong with seeing the game at home? Some of us can't even affort to see the game with 80 buck tickets and distance driving!

If it's not required, let's not change the rules please!

I hate *******es who sue for stupid ****.

First it was suing Mcdonalds because you got fat eating their ****.

Than it was suing Burger King cause the coffee they gave you was hot.

Than it was suing schools for the Pledge of Allegance

Now its suing an NFL team cause you're deaf and cant read ref's signals.

Dont be so high mantainance. If you dont like it, have the ******* next to you translate or learn the signals, or watch from home, dont be a *******.

The refs signal doesn't include who the penalty was against. So, yeah, they know it's holding, but won't know who did it unless it was pretty blatant. Which is a bit tougher to see from the upper deck than it is on the TV at home. And, um, it's not just for penalties.

They have, as customers, a legitimate concern. However, with no law requiring it, they clearly went about it the wrong way. Then again, perhaps this is the most efficient way to go about getting it changed.

Why dont you give them complimentary anaglyph glasses instead of 7" TVs?

Who cares which player the penalty is against, the ref makes a hand signal as to what the penalty is, then he points to the side which commited the penalty.

The Redskins should hire two new people for this.

Joe Theismann to provide running commentary to the deaf for the entire game and a person to sign said commentary throughout the entire game. At this point <strike>RFK Stadium</strike> Fed Ex Field will be the closest thing to handicapped accessible hell on Earth.

My first question is, deaf for not, who CAN hear anything over the PA system at a game? Particularly in a stadium with 90K+ fans screaming.
