Game-day details
Sun., 1 p.m. ET, Dolphins Stadium
Weather forecast from AccuWeather.com:
Rain. High: 85. Low: 74.
Why To Watch
If Week 6's games are any indication of what to expect from these teams, this is a must-see game if only for innovative styles of offense. The Chiefs' No. 1 receiver was a running back, and the Dolphins' No. 1 runner was a wide receiver. Go figure.
Running back Priest Holmes had five catches for 100 yards against the Redskins. The one-two punch of Holmes and Larry Johnson must atone for their combined 71 yards rushing. Quarterback Trent Green must get the ball to tight end Tony Gonzalez, the Chiefs' best receiver who is being used far more as a blocker. Wide receiver Eddie Kennison is a viable target but hasn't had a breakout game, either.
Dolphins wide receiver Chris Chambers, despite the presence of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, was the team's leading rusher with a whopping 25 yards against the Buccaneers in Week 6. The team did have more points (13) than penalties (nine), so there is improvement. Injuries, however, have created depth issues in their solid run defense.
The Dolphins are 2-0 at home and must beat the Chiefs to stay within striking distance of Buffalo and New England in the AFC East.
Chiefs Keys For Success
1. Use hard counts. Miami's defense is aggressive, trying to jump the snap count to gain an edge against blockers to pierce the line for a negative yardage play and/or turnover. Six Dolphins were flagged for being offside in Week 5's loss to Buffalo. Green has a reputation for drawing defenders offside with a hard count, and he is sure to mix up the snap count to keep the Dolphins guessing.
2. Throw screen passes. The offense uses screen passes liberally against aggressive defenses that tend to overpursue the ball. Holmes always is a threat as a receiver, and this might be a way to get underused Gonzalez more touches. Dolphins cornerbacks often are left in press coverage, allowing for screens to develop after they turn to run with the wide receivers.
3. Mask the coverages. Dolphins quarterback Gus Frerotte will audible out of the called play when he sees a safety drop into the box, trying to gain an advantage over a three-deep coverage scheme. In Week 5, Buffalo moved its safeties in and out of the box before the snap to confuse Frerotte and force him into a delay-of-game penalty. Look for the Chiefs to mask their intentions to limit Frerotte's options.
Dolphins Keys For Success
1. Use maximum protection schemes. The offensive line is limited in pass protection, and Frerotte is a better quarterback when he gets time to step into throws. Frerotte hit wide receiver Marty Booker on a 52-yard pass in Week 5, and Frerotte had 173 yards passing in the second half last week when the protection held up. Look for running backs and tight end Randy McMichael to continue being part of the blocking scheme even though it limits options in the passing game.
2. Throw deep. The Chiefs have problems defending downfield passes. Linebackers focus on stopping the run, and safeties are tentative to close on seam routes downfield and bend routes horizontally. Booker and Chambers are physical and will fight for the ball against man-to-man coverage.
3. Bracket Gonzalez. With the return of left tackle Willie Roaf, Gonzalez is freed up from pass-blocking duties and again will used more as a receiver. Gonzalez was not able to release into patterns often against Philadelphia in Week 4, but when he did, he was bracketed by two defenders and finished with two catches for five yards. Even with Holmes' success as a receiver last week, Miami shouldn't take Gonzalez lightly.
Injuries at a glance
Chiefs injuries
No injuries reported
Dolphins injuries
10/17/05 Jason Taylor DE Foot Questionable for Week 7
10/13/05 Junior Seau LB Calf Injured in Week 3
The Bottom Line
Kansas City has only marginally better depth and skill players but makes fewer mistakes than Miami and can put more points on the board. While the Dolphins try to recover from self-inflicted penalties, the Chiefs will capitalize and stay in the AFC West hunt.
Pick: Chiefs 27, Dolphins 17

6. Kansas City Chiefs at Miami Dolphins | Scouting report
The Chiefs got their way. Sensing the game against the Dolphins would have to be moved because of Hurricane Wilma, the Chiefs preferred an early move instead of a later move. Waiting until Monday or Tuesday would have been bad for the Chiefs. They have to play the Chargers in San Diego next Sunday, and that game is important for their playoff hopes. In terms of health, the Chiefs have an advantage. Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor (foot) and linebacker Junior Seau (calf) have two fewer days to recover from injuries that are keeping them from practice. The only big question mark on the Chiefs injury list is cornerback Dexter McCleon, who has a groin injury, but Eric Warfield is available after his four-week suspension and his extra week of not playing gives the Chiefs a healthy option. Of course, the Chiefs were hoping the game would be moved to Kansas City, but for competitive reasons, that wasn't going to happen. The Chiefs pulled off a tough seven-point win against the Redskins and ended the disappointment of the blown loss to the Eagles a couple of weeks back. The Chiefs' offense hasn't hit its stride yet. After being the league's highest scoring team in 2004, they are averaging a touchdown less a game at 23.8. The Dolphins will obviously try to run the ball with Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown. Yet, here's the weird stat for the Dolphins: Nick Saban figured to make the Dolphins a running team to take pressure off a shaky passing offense, but they have run the ball only 37.8 percent of time. It has been hard for the Dolphins to consistently run the ball because they don't have the lead.
