The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were back on the practice field Saturday for the home stretch of training camp. It was the team's first workout session since their first pre-season game in Hamilton on Thursday night.
The quarterbacks continued their strong play from the exhibition contest, looking sharp while hitting receivers in stride during route-running drills.
In Thursday's game, there were a few players in the secondary that stood out and made some big plays. Canadian halfback Steven Holness (#30) had a huge interception. Jovon Johnson (#29), a defensive back who has had a sensational training camp, picked off a pass late and nearly had another later in the game. The speedy ball hawk has been showing off his quick hands in practices and in game situations.
"That's just the way I play the game. Every time there's a chance to make a play, I'm going to make it," said Johnson, who won a Grey Cup with Saskatchewan last year.
There are a number of veteran defensive backs on the team, so Johnson knows he has to be patient in his role with the Blue Bombers.
"Whatever my role is, I'm willing to accept it," the University of Iowa product said. "I think I'm capable, but at the same time I know that there's guys in front of me that have been here and know the system and can play the game. I'm just going to be patient and wait my turn. When my name gets called and its time for me to play, I will be ready"
Another young defensive back that has shown promise is Marc Beswick (#38). The Vancouver native was chosen in the fourth round (31st overall) out of St. Mary's in the April's Canadian college draft. He took turns at halfback and at corner in the exhibition game Thursday.
Beswick, 25, is enjoying is first experience in professional football.
"I'm having a blast. My first CFL game was fun. I'm glad I went out there, and I thought I played all right. The coaches gave me some great feedback," Beswick said. "I realized that I can play in this league. It's pretty much going out there and being consistent. That's been the biggest adjustment. The playbook is much bigger here than in college."
The rookie also has been taking some reps at safety, as head coach Doug Berry is evaluating many of the young players to see which positions each can play.
"I think I'm a pretty good cover guy. But I also like to make a lot of hits and I would consider myself a sound tackler," Beswick explained.
