Cardinals Rookie RB Ryan Williams might be out for the season

Williams' injury could leave Cardinals thin at running back

Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Ryan Williams could be out for the season after being carted off the field Friday night following an injury to his lower right knee and leg early in a preseason loss at Green Bay.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt feared a ruptured patella tendon, which would require season-ending surgery. It will also hurt the Cardinals' depth at the position.

"If it is what we suspect, then, yes, it's a season-ender," Whisenhunt said.

Much of the team gathered around Williams as he was helped onto the cart. Williams, head in his hand, was consoled by several players, including starting running back Beanie Wells.

Hes a good kid, first and foremost, Wells told azcardinals.com. Hes going to be a good football player here and guys like him. Hes one of the guys everyone cares about.

Williams was injured when a Packer appeared to land on his leg after a carry.

Williams, a second-round draft pick in April, was important to the Cardinals' offensive plan this year as a backup to Wells, especially since Whisenhunt favors a two-back system. Williams' addition also led the Cardinals to trade Tim Hightower to the Washington Redskins at the start of training camp.

Williams' injury leaves little depth at running back. LaRod Stephens-Howling would back up Wells, and the only other running back is Alfonso Smith, a second-year pro out of Kentucky.
