Now Washington views special teams as his ticket to get back on the field. And instead of being upset about the change, Washington is taking a team-first attitude.

“I think that’s what it’s going to have to be,” Washington said with a laugh.

“I’m embracing it, man. I just want to get on the field by any means necessary. If I’ve got to play special teams, I’ll play special teams.”

Washington approached Special Teams Coordinator Jerry Rosburg with the idea of playing on special teams a few weeks ago. He now practices at several positions, utilizing his speed and tackling.

Washington, a six-year NFL veteran, hadn’t played special teams since his rookie season, but he said he’s picking it up quickly.

“Special teams, to me, is just want-to,” Washington said. “There’s guys out there that just fly around. That’s what special teams is, and I have no problem doing that.”

During training camp, Washington envisioned himself being the Ravens’ top cornerback. Domonique Foxworth went down with a knee injury, Lardarius Webb was still rehabbing and the Ravens had yet to trade for Josh Wilson.

Washington ran into trouble against Buffalo, when he was beaten for three touchdowns. He started the next game against Miami, but was replaced at halftime.

“The season didn’t quite go how I wanted it to go for myself, but as a team we’re 8-3 and we’re winning,” Washington said. “You can’t be too down about winning. It’s my first time at 8-3. I’m trying to win a Super Bowl.

“I said this year I’m going to have fun with it and that’s what I’m doing. I’m having a blast.”
