Leslie Frazier wants Christian Ponder to start Week One
Quote:
About those rumors of the Vikings still being in the market for a veteran like Donovan McNabb? Though a lockout that wipes out all of the offseason and training camp and the preseason could make a move for a game-ready veteran quarterback necessary, coach Leslie Frazier’s preference would be to immediately rely on Christian Ponder, the 12th overall pick in the 2011 draft.
“Ideally, I’d like for him to be ready to go when we play San Diego [in Week One],” Frazier said during a segment with 1500 ESPN Twin Cities. “That would be the ideal situation — we’ve got our Matt Ryan, we’ve got our [Joe] Flacco, we’ve got our [Mark] Sanchez right here. But because of the uncertainty of the offseason, it’s just hard to determine exactly how you want to approach it. So, we need a little more clarity on what this offseason’s going to be like.”
And so the status of the Minnesota starting quarterback will depend in large part on the viability of the court ruling from the federal district of Minnesota.
“It would be tough to be able to send him out there against San Diego if we don’t start football, if we don’t report until, say, mid-August, or three weeks prior to the season,” Frazier said. “That would be a tough, tough deal for any young quarterback. It’s tough enough just getting through OTAs and preseason games, but if we start this thing without preseason games or one preseason game, I think you have to rethink how you approach it. So, that’ll probably answer what direction we go — based on when we start football.”
The fact that Frazier is willing to openly say that Ponder ideally would start the season represents the next step in the play-’em-right-away evolution of drafting quarterbacks in round one. Even for rookie quarterbacks drafted since 2008 who have started in Week One, they weren’t handed the reins only days after being picked.
Ponder will — if the lockout ends in time for the Vikings to get him ready.
The process began on Friday. Per Tom Pelissero of 1500espn.com, Ponder met with offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave and quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson on Friday, before the lockout was reinstated. Ponder also spoke with receiver Percy Harvin, who will be Ponder’s lockout conduit with veteran players. Ponder and Percy could be organizing lockout workouts in Florida, if the lockout lingers beyond the appeals court’s looming decision regarding whether it should continue.

That's who I'd compare him to as well. Wasn't a fan of Matt Ryan coming out, and I still think he's over-rated.

I just think they play similarly. As for why Ryan is over-rated, it's because he's hyped as an elite player, and he's clearly not one. His QB rates of 87, 80 and 91 are not elite. They're above average, but far from elite. Especially when you consider that he is in a run-first offense, and has great weapons in Roddy and Gonzo.

Gonzo fell off the map last year, he was mostly ineffective, his only real weapon was White. And I don't think he is overrated, I don't rank him as elite which is my tier 2 QBs, but he is a great QB which is tier 3.

Yeah I see him as a tier 3 guy too. Nothing special, but I'd be content with him as my QB if I needed one. He could turn into an Aaron Rodgers type, but he's sure not right now. Keep in mind that Ryan (5-85) is only 3 years younger than Big Ben (3-82), and only 1.5 years younger than Rodgers (12-83).

70 receptions and 6 TDs (about his career averages) is hardly falling off the map. You're reaching now. They were down a bit, but not that much. You can't just cherry pick the seasons he had 3 & 4 years ago and say that's the expectation, because throughout his long career, those aren't what he usually produced at. He's had 4 big seasons spread throughout his career, but usually they're just a little better than what he had last year. Even if he isn't still that player, his presence still makes defenses respect him, ala Randy Moss in '04, when he was hurt and Dumbte had his best season ever, since Moss was still a decoy and the D still had to respect him, even if he wasn't fully effective.

Watch him play last year compared to his previous years, he's no where near the same player. He'll be retiring after this year as well, so he knows.
