Vikings Vikings giving Everson Griffen another look at linebacker

Quote:
Though the Vikings are sufficiently thin at linebacker to be interested in Brian Banks (I still wish someone would sign that guy), one of the strategies for addressing this specific area of weakness comes from one of the few areas of the roster that currently constitute a strength.

Defensive end Everson Griffen, a fourth-round pick in 2010, spent the final practice of last week’s mandatory minicamp at linebacker, according to Brian Hall of FOXSportsNorth.com. In training camp, Griffen will get more opportunities.

“We want to give him a chance to see if he can help us at that linebacker spot where we’re still working with our depth,” coach Leslie Frazier said last week. “We’re still trying to identify what our depth is going to be at that position.”

Griffen current serves as the primary backup to starters Jared Allen and Brian Robison. The former Trojan had limited snaps at linebacker in 2011, but he primarily worked as a defensive lineman, earning some reps at defensive tackle in passing situations.

“I’m comfortable,” Griffen said. “With my athletic ability, I feel like I can come and pretty much do anything. That’s not me being cocky. I just feel like I can just come in and adapt to the situation.”

Allen’s annual absence from voluntary offseason workouts gave Griffen reps with the first team. With Allen in town for the mandatory sessions, Griffen was forced back to the second team.

Griffen has appeared in 27 games during his two NFL seasons, with no starts. He racked up four sacks and forced a fumble in 2011.

One of the few highlights of last season was watching Everson Griffin. Particularly watching him line up as a gunner on punts was HILARIOUS. The dude can book it, despite his size and really surprised me. I think he's got the speed to play Linebacker, either way it'll be something to distract me from our win-lose record

lol, only possible to get 3 games worse than last season... although looking at the schedule, it could be much better with the following games:
Colts - Yeah they have Andrew Luck, but I'm skeptical the #1 overall rookie can whip the rest of the team into shape the way Peyton had them just through 1 off-season
Jaguars - With MJD holding out, and Blackmon getting DUI's (oh and Blaine Gabbert at the reins), I think we have a decent shot at this game at home
Cardinals - A QB Carousel of priority and neither of whom can get the ball properly to Fitzgerald. I think the Cardinals success this year will rest largely on the shoulders of their defense.
Rams - Sam Bradford is still going to get crushed all season long by defensive lines.

So I think we'll at least win these four, it depends on how much our O-line improves with the addition of Matt Kalil and moving of Charlie Johnson. Its also time to see what Christian Ponder can do after his rough freshman year in the league. I'd like to see an 8-8 season, but that might be a bit lofty.

Ehh not the Cards. They were an 8-8 team last year even with their QB problems. They actually have a pretty decent team right now.

Big fan of Everson Griffen. This kid was a steal in the 4th round and I look forward to seeing more of him this year. The Vikings are definitely a weak team but they aren't as bad as everyone thinks. They lost A LOT of close games last year(which I'm glad they did cause we got Kalil)and to be honest I hope they lose a lot of close ones this year too. If we can grab the top receiver or corner in next years draft I'll be very excited about Vikings football.
