Giants Giants have only two cornerbacks under contract

Quote:
As the Giants prepare to defend their latest Super Bowl win in a league that has become increasingly pass happy, the team is facing a troubling fact.

Only two cornerbacks are under contract for 2012: Prince Amukamura and Corey Webster.

Two key corners will become free agents absent new deals. Terrell Thomas, who missed all of the 2011 after tearing an ACL in training camp, has an expiring contract. Aaron Ross, a first-round pick in 2007, started all but one game this year. His rookie deal is up, too.

Ross says he wants to stay. ďOf course, of course,Ē Ross told Jorge Castillo of the Newark Star-Ledger. ďIíve been here five years so thatís like asking me if I want to go back to [Texas]. I invested four years there and five years here so my heart is here.Ē

But while Ross wants to stay, it doesnít mean heíll be giving his adopted hometown a hometown discount.

ďI donít know. We got to see,Ē Ross said. ďItís all a business. Itís all a business. I donít know numbers. Iíll leave that up to my agent.

ďIíve seen that itís a business from the start. Coming into the league, Sam [Madison], all of those guys told me itís a business so the front office is going to take care of themselves and we as players have to take care of ourselves. Hopefully we can meet somewhere in the middle to where both of us agree.Ē

Thatíll be hard to do, if another team is willing to pay Ross a premium for the privilege of having a guy who has won two Super Bowl rings flash them in a locker room full of guys with none.

ďAny player going to free agency coming off a Super Bowl win, itís a bonus for them especially if heís a starter,Ē Ross said. ďHopefully itíll come out in my favor.Ē

It definitely will. But only if Ross ultimately is willing to leave the Giants.

Based on the picture, he apparently would be interested in the Broncos. Along with at least two of his teammates.

If Thomas is healthy and good to go, he might be a steal for a team looking for another physical corner. ACL isn't a small injury though, it shouldn't be as big a deal at DB as it is for a RB...
