49ers Santa Clara to negotiate with Joe Montana on hotel near 49ers stadium

The 49ers benefited a great deal from their relationship with Joe Montana when he quarterbacked the team at Candlestick Park and now Montana is hoping to benefit from the construction of the team’s new stadium in Santa Clara.

Santa Clara’s City Council voted 4-2 on Tuesday night to give a group fronted by Montana the exclusive rights to negotiate with the city to build a hotel on two vacant lots of city-owned land across from the stadium, which is expected to open in time for the 2014 season. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Montana’s group says they have the financial backing to build a hotel that garners at least four stars, a sports bar, an “upscale” restaurant and “additional entertainment uses.”

In the history of vague phrases, it is hard to think of one that says less while encompassing more than “additional entertainment uses.”

The two no votes came from councilmen who believe the space should be open to all bidders in order to generate the most money for the city’s coffers. Councilwoman Lisa Gillmor told the Mercury News that she was “perplexed” as to why anyone would be against a deal that would bring “star power” to the city.

That seems a strange thing to wonder in a county that just yanked $30 million in funding for the stadium, but local politics don’t always subscribe to one’s notions of normalcy. Montana’s group holds the exclusive rights for a year, at which point a group headed by Steve Young will get their chance to build a hotel.

We kid, although Montana’s group does have a year to make a deal.
