The Tampa Bay Buccaneers added more competition to their cornerback position Tuesday, signing fifth-year free agent cornerback Sammy Davis to a contract.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Davis originally entered the NFL as a first-round pick with the San Diego Chargers. He spent three seasons with the Chargers (2003-05) before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2006.

Davis, 26, has recorded 152 career tackles, three interceptions, 31 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one sack in 56 games (31 starts).

The Bucs have added three cornerbacks to their roster since Mar. 1. Tampa Bay re-signed Phillip Buchanon and Torrie Cox, and it now adds Davis.

In addition to that move, the Bucs announced the signing of defensive tackles Levon Thomas and Lance Legree, and wide receiver Levon Thomas. These signings were previously reported on PewterReport.com.

TAMPA - The Bucs on Tuesday signed cornerback Sammy Davis, a first-round pick (30th overall) of the Chargers in 2003 who was traded to the 49ers last season.

Davis, 26, played in 13 games with one start last season, totaling 30 tackles and six passes defensed. He joins a long list of signed cornerbacks, including Ronde Barber, Brian Kelly, Phillip Buchanon and Torrie Cox. With Kelly expected to return from a turf toe injury next season, there should be a good battle for the nickelback spot with Juran Bolden, who also could be asked to move to safety.

The Bucs also announced the signing of 49ers free-agent defensive tackle Lance Legree, former Raiders defensive tackle Kenny Smith and receiver Levon Thomas, a member of the Saints practice squad the past two seasons.
